Biography

Whitslade & Burngrange were held by the Lauder of Haltoun family for centuries.

On the 30th August 1461 an Inquest was held at Lauder by Sir William de Cranstoun of Corsby, knight, Sheriff Depute of Berwick, upon which sat Alan de Lawder of that Ilk, [this] Robert Lawder of Whitslade, Robert Lawder of Murecleuch, John Lawder of Burngrange [which lands abutted those of Whitslaid], and others with the same surname.^[1]

Robert Lauder of Whitslaid appears as a witness in a Notarial Instrument of Sir Alexander Home of that Ilk, signed at Dryburgh on 21st June 1468.^[2]

A Special Retour in favour of Andrew Redpeth as heir of the deceased William Redpeth, of Greneside, his father, in certain husbandlands called 'lie Greneside' in the town of Greenlaw, was heard on dated 5th April 1484. The Inquest was held before Oliver Lawder of that Ilk, depute for Patrick [Hepburn], Lord Hailes, sheriff of Berwick. Members of inquest - Adam Nesbit of that Ilk, [this] Robert Lawder of Quhytslade, David Lummisden of Blanerne (near Edrom, Berwicks.), Robert Lawder of Burngranis (son of the above John), Robert Nesbit, Philip Nesbit, Thomas Borthwick, Alexander Hately [Haitlie], Adam Edgar of Weddale, Thomas Atkinson of Sleichishouss, Robert Franch of Thornydikis, Patrick Dickson, Robert Dickson, Robert Wod, David Wod, Alan Grey of Burncastel, Robert Furde [Ford] of Burncastel, Gilbert Lawder, and John Lummisden.^[3]
